If you know little about Oliver Cromwell and want to know more, come to Huntingdon. The Cromwells were a prominent local landowning family and Oliver Cromwell was born here. In keeping with this local tradition, we take pride in the fact that The George, which has also been a coaching inn, was once the home of Oliver Cromwell's grandfather and that the Cromwell Museum is 200 yards from the hotel.
Eating
Indeed, traditional values coexist with modern comforts at The George. The bar and restaurant offers an extensive choice of good traditional English and Continental fayre and beverages.
Shakespeare plays are performed every year in the last week of June and the first week in July in the pleasant courtyard.
Accommodation
The 24 en-suite bedrooms are superbly equipped including CD, modem points, radio, TV, telephone, iron and ironing board, hair dryer and wifi access now available. A feature room and a four-poster bedroom are available.
Functions
The hotel has three function rooms which accommodate up to 100 people seated and 150 people buffet style. The Manchester suite is ideal for weddings, banquets and dinner dances.
Around and About
The Cromwell Trail will take you to Hinchingbrooke House, one of Cromwell's homes, one-and-a-half miles away. The historic university town of Cambridge is
15 miles away (Cromwell spent a year there at Sidney Sussex College). The cathedral city of Ely is also within easy driving distance (Cromwell and his family moved to Ely in 1636 and the last of his nine children were born there). If you're not on the Cromwell Trail, however, just enjoy the comforts of The George Hotel, whether or not you also take in the attractions of Cambridge and Ely, and give no thought to the once Lord Protector of England. Also Huntingdon racecourse is only 10 minutes away.
